World Press Freedom Day 2021

Third of May of every year, nations of the world marks the World Press Freedom Day in acknowledgement of the invaluable contribution of the press to society.

The Nigerian press has been a critical stakeholder in the realization and advancement of our democracy. Much thanks are owed to the Fourth Estate for whatever heights our nation has attained today.

With freedom comes responsibility. Having earned its due regard as a result of its contributions to nation building, the Nigerian press has patriotically signed up for a life of leadership and responsibility.

Whether the rest of us are as committed to the Nigerian project like the press has done is a question upon which we all must reflect.

Notwithstanding the gains, there are a lot of Nigerians who believe that our press has a lot to do specifically in using its freedom to hold citizens and governments accountable and, generally, as development partners. I cannot disagree with them. I am only thankful that we ALL have the time to make things right.
